Sold with Furniture

With 'Sold, with Furniture' I wanted to create a film that felt like a fairy-tale and I was very inspired by the magical realism genre. I wanted to explore the theme of grief through the main character, Alfie's curiosity over death and the possibility that the spirit world and our world are tightly linked. However, I wanted these themes to be ambiguous, giving the audience the chance to come to their own conclusion about whether the spirits are real or if it is just the imaginings of a child dealing with death.

'Sold, with Furniture' was a really fun project to work on as I also got to experiment and play around with animation in a narrative form. It also gave me my first opportunity to work with a child actress, a very different experience compared to directing adults. With a budget of under £100, I built my own sets, thrifted costumes and created the aesthetic of the film. It was a privilege to have the film feature in 'The Paus Premieres Film Festival 2022'.

The film was later nominated at the RTS Devon & Cornwall Student Television Awards 2023, where it made it in the top three for the animation category and won the award for ‘Craft Skills: Production Design’.
